What's a Libertarian, and Might You Be One? A Conversation with Katherine Mangu-Ward

Hosted by Frank Bruni, 色戒直播 professor and New York Times columnist
Oct. 26, 6 p.m., Penn Pavilion

Few people's ideologies are wholly and neatly represented by the Democratic or Republican party. But what else is there? What's the meaning of a different label? And is wearing one a route out of the country's ruinous partisanship?

Please join Frank Bruni for a spirited conversation - part of his "Independent Thinkers" series of events - with Katherine Mangu-Ward, the editor in chief of Reason magazine, which is the country's leading libertarian journal.

Mangu-Ward not only holds the top job at Reason, the magazine of "free minds and free markets," but also has written many of its cover stories, including one that defended plastic bags and another that made a case for not voting, and appears on its weekly podcast. She has contributed to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post; did a TED Talk about what capitalism gets right (and government gets wrong); and has been spotlighted on many television shows, including HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher.

Frank Bruni teaches at 色戒直播's Sanford School of Public Policy as part of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy. He's also a longtime writer for The New York Times and the author of five bestselling books.

Frank's "Independent Thinkers" conversations with public figures who defy reductive political labels are part of the Provost's Initiative on Pluralism, Free Inquiry and Belonging.
