The Sperling Center for Jewish Studies welcomes Ari Joskowicz, who will give a lecture entitled "Money and Memory: How Funding Shaped the Documentation of Jewish History and the Holocaust." Joskowicz is the Eugene Greener Jr. Chair in Jewish Studies and Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Vanderbilt University, where he also directs the Max Kade Center for European and German Studies. A historian of modern Jewish and European history, his scholarship explores the intersections of Jewish history, minority politics, memory, and the Holocaust, with particular attention to the relationships between Jewish and Romani communities in Europe.
Joskowicz is the author of the award-winning books Rain of Ash: Roma, Jews, and the Holocaust (Princeton University Press, 2023) and The Modernity of Others: Jewish Anti-Catholicism in Germany and France (Stanford University Press, 2014). His research has been recognized with major honors, including the Ernst Fraenkel Prize of the Wiener Library and the George L. Mosse Prize from the American Historical Association for Rain of Ash.
Through his teaching and scholarship, Joskowicz examines how histories of persecution, displacement, and memory shape our understanding of modern Europe. His work draws on a wide range of archival sources and has contributed significantly to contemporary discussions of Holocaust history, minority experiences, and the politics of remembrance.
